News Story

Excitement is building for the upcoming Youth Takeover at Theatre Royal Winchester, which features a very special cross‑generational collaboration.

Presented by Play to the Crowd, the event will see our Playmakers Youth Theatre perform Superglue by Tim Crouch as part of the prestigious National Theatre Connections nationwide festival. To help bring this powerful production to life, the young cast recently welcomed residents from St John's Winchester to the theatre to record a top‑secret element for the show.

The creative engagement team hosted the special guests directly on the historic stage, sharing stories, hot drinks, and quality time together while capturing the recordings that will play a vital role in the final performance.

Bringing a vital story to the stage

Superglue is a brand‑new play that tells the poignant story of a group of climate activists who gather at a woodland burial ground to say goodbye to a friend who tragically died during a protest. As they erect their banners, the characters debate their pasts and futures, peaceful versus violent action, and the ways in which society dismisses them and undervalues their cause.

The young actors in the Playmakers Youth Theatre cohort feel a deep connection to the production's core message.

I feel like it's very relevant and it's obviously talking about climate change which is an ongoing issue

Molly, Youth Theatre participant

It's quite important to do a show about spreading awareness about the environment

Connecting our community across generations

Collaborations like the one between our youth theatre and St John's Winchester lie at the very heart of Play to the Crowd's mission to be a vibrant catalyst for a happier, more connected district. Bringing together different generations to share a creative space not only enriches the production but strengthens the community bonds outside the theatre walls.

We want to extend our warmest thanks to the residents of St John's Winchester for their time, incredible enthusiasm, and invaluable contribution to the show.

Audiences can experience the final result of this wonderful collaboration and support our young performers by booking tickets to the upcoming performance showcase.
