Dame Judi Dench returns to Theatre Royal Winchester
25 Oct 2021News Story
The atmosphere was electric as peerless performer Dame Judi Dench graced the stage of Theatre Royal Winchester for an unforgettable evening of conversation, nostalgia, and laughter.
In front of a completely sold-out auditorium, the legendary actress was joined by her long‑time friend and biographer, John Miller. The special event explored the stunning highlights of her historic career across stage and screen, as well as her experiences during lockdown.
The evening held a deep significance for the venue. Dame Judi was a passionate champion of our charity's Survival Campaign during the summer of 2020, actively urging the public to support Play to the Crowd when the pandemic forced our doors to close.
It's lovely to be back, especially in this theatre, it's a beautiful theatre here in Winchester
A heartfelt return to a favourite space
Stepping back onto the stage, Dame Judi expressed her immense joy at experiencing the magic of live performance once again.
"Live theatre is important. The last two years we haven't had a chance to be in the theatre, the audience hasn't had a chance to be there. I'm absolutely thrilled to be in a theatre again. It's lovely to be back, especially in this theatre, it's a beautiful theatre here in Winchester." – Dame Judi Dench
This visit marked a continuation of Dame Judi's fond history with the venue, which began during the Winchester Festival in 2002 when she stepped in at the last minute to be interviewed by John Miller. She later returned to tread the boards for dramatic recitals in Great Eccentrics in 2005 alongside Michael Pennington, and again in 2008 alongside Charles Dance.

Delighting and uniting for a local cause
As an charity, Play to the Crowd aims to be a vibrant catalyst for positive community impact. We were absolutely delighted to open our doors at Theatre Royal Winchester to enable this special event to raise vital funds for another crucial local organisation: Home‑Start Winchester.
Home‑Start works tirelessly across the district to support families with young children navigating challenging times. Following the main event, Dame Judi surprised ecstatic fans in the foyer by staying behind to sign copies of her biography.
A lasting impact on our community
The evening beautifully embodied our charity's overarching goal to bring people together through the power of shared cultural experiences.
"We were delighted to have theatrical royalty with us at Theatre Royal Winchester. Judi Dench supported our Survival Campaign in the Summer of 2020 and so we were very touched to see her on our stage and in such good form. Dame Judi Dench personifies our vision as a charity to delight and unite. She did just that for a packed house." – Deryck Newland (Chief Executive and Artistic Director, Play to the Crowd)
We want to extend a massive thank you to Dame Judi Dench, John Miller, the team at Home‑Start Winchester, and our incredible audience of supporters and volunteers who made this evening of local storytelling possible.
