Knitted King Alf

Knitted King Alf is a large‑scale community participation project, inviting people of all ages and abilities to knit or crochet small figures inspired by King Alfred the Great.
These handmade creations were shared, displayed, and hidden across Winchester as part of a city‑wide creative trail, encouraging exploration, connection, and creativity.
Originally developed during a period of social isolation, the project grew into a joyful, collective activity that engaged participants locally, nationally, and internationally.
Objectives & approach
Creative participation at scale
Open to everyone — from beginners to experienced makers — the project provided accessible knitting and crochet patterns, enabling widespread involvement regardless of skill level or location.
Community‑powered making
Hundreds of knitted figures were created by individuals and groups, with participants encouraged to share their creations and journeys online, building a sense of shared ownership and momentum.
City‑wide engagement
The finished King Alfs were hidden around Winchester as part of a public trail, inviting residents and visitors to explore the city, discover the figures, and share their experiences.
Festival integration
The project formed part of our outdoor arts festival, Hat Fair, with knitted figures distributed to festival audiences, extending the life of the project as Alfs travelled beyond the city and continued their journeys.
