Community Celebration 2025
Overview
Community Celebration 2025 brought together communities from across Winchester and beyond for a joyful one-night performance of music, dance, storytelling and song.
Inspired by the theme "When life feels like a beach", the project explored sanctuary, connection and belonging, celebrating the people, places and moments that help us feel safe, supported and fully alive.
Co‑created with a wide range of community partners, the celebration featured participants from Playmakers Drama Clubs in South Wonston, Wickham and Oliver’s Battery, Blue Apple Theatre, The Amazing Fusion Choir, music production students from the University of Winchester, local artists Lala Smaglova and 432 Nomads, and residents of St John's Almshouses.
The result was a vibrant and uplifting shared performance rooted in local voices and lived experience.
Objectives & approach
Creating a shared celebration through co‑creation
The project was developed in collaboration with a wide range of community partners and participants, ensuring the final performance reflected many different voices, experiences and creative perspectives.
Using professional artistry to support community expression
Over a series of workshops, professional artists worked closely with participants to shape material for the final event. The musical composition strand was led by Chloe Kirson‑Jones, who collaborated with participants to create original music and soundscapes for the performance.
Weaving together story, sound and visuals
Filmmaker David Kenny gathered real stories about sanctuary and safe spaces, which were woven throughout the event. These were complemented by original animations created by Artist Intern Ilyssa Marasigan, helping to build a rich visual and emotional landscape inspired by the workshop process.
Culminating in a joyful public moment
The creative process came together in a one-night performance that celebrated connection, creativity and belonging, also featuring acclaimed dance‑circus company Joli Vyann.
Being part of the Community Celebration was fantastic. I felt incredibly proud to contribute and watch it all come together- it was joyful, moving, and a brilliant example of what community arts can be.
Social impact

By bringing together participants from different age groups, backgrounds and communities, the project created a collective space where people could feel seen, heard and connected.
Through a shared performance centred on sanctuary and belonging, it helped strengthen relationships and reduce feelings of isolation, contributing to a more united community.

The workshops and final performance offered participants a chance to express themselves creatively, reflect on what makes them feel safe and alive, and experience the uplifting power of making something together.
Through music, storytelling, movement and visual art, the project supported wellbeing while creating moments of pride, delight and emotional connection.
3. A platform for local voices and emerging talent
The project gave community participants, students and local creatives the opportunity to contribute to a high‑profile public performance alongside professional artists. This helped nurture confidence, develop creative skills and give visibility to emerging talent, while reinforcing the value of community voices in shaping cultural life.

In doing so, it supported wellbeing, strengthened community ties and gave local voices a platform — reflecting the charity's belief that creativity can help delight and unite the communities it serves.
